Below I reproduce the full article written by Paco del Pino Cross, on Concepts offensive in transition with Cadets FMB, for the Federación Melillense Basketball (here the original article).
The goal is to raise awareness of this proposal because, sure, you can extract very good learning and allows us to consider possible game situations.

Introduction
This article with which I collaborate again with #ArtículosFMB presents a chronology clear in time with those previously published by Javier Nieto about BASKETBALL LIVE (#ArtículoFMB002) and with that of Alexander the Lemon on FACE SIDE (#ArtículoFMB004), since immediately after these aspects offensive placed the TRANSITION.
Going to use as a basis the work done with the Selection Cadet Male FMB of the current season (2019-20), this article attempts to highlight the most important aspects worked with these guys to the time of setting standards that are offensive, starting with 3 rules or simple structures offensive in transition and leading to a greater complexity to post in
systems for the last phase of the attack in 5×5.
Before you mark why? the structures of offensive chosen I understand well sorting out some characteristic data general of the guys that made up this selection, level of player profiles and anthropometric data. According to the data obtained at the beginning of the season (almost 4 months before the competition) the average height of the team was 181cm, with a stop in 189cm of two players from the outer profile, and in terms of large and small, the average was around 180cm with a top-of-188cm two players (one of the outer profile and 184cm tall, and the other our unique player clear inner profile with 186cm tall). In short, we find only a clear player profile inside 186cm tall and 184cm major (alternating on some occasions outdoor situations of advantage that we will see later), and with a second player 189cm tall and 185cm with a wingspan of clear exterior profile with a threat from 6,75 but with his ability to throw the ball to the ground still developing, leaving the template structure of the following form:
| PERFIL DE JUGADOR | Nº (12) | CARACTERÍSTICAS GLOBALES OFENSIVAS PREDOMINANTES EN CADA PERFIL |
|---|---|---|
| EXTERNAL PROFILE (FUTURE FOUNDATION) | 2 | In addition to the described below with exterior, assume the maximum liability at the time of the 5×5, reading benefits, choice of systems… |
| OUTER PROFILE | 8 | Profile predominant in the template, within the small quirks of each player if you do a lot of emphasis on our need to impose a high rate of CAA and be able to be brave to play hands at the hands of aggressive, locks, direct and perform the best shots possible. |
| PROFILE OUTER-INNER (PROSPECTIVE ADVENTURING 4) | 1 | Highlighting the threat from 6.75 and your great game without a ball outside and inside. |
| INNER PROFILE | 1 | 186cm height and 184cm scale, highlighting his ability to rebound, offensive and defensive, great player of spaces on the bounce and their ability to play without the ball in areas close to the ring. |
This box, in addition to the technical-tactics of the players led us to propose the structures and rules offensive that is described in this article, you are able to catalogue our team as “small” in comparison with the rest of the selections of the autonomous community to which we tend to face. It should be noted that this template structure is common within the program of selections FMB (with variations-off), therefore this work of structuring the part to the offensive team seems to be in continuity for generations to come.
Objective and concepts bases
It is evident that with these structures or rules, are offensive transition is sought as a GLOBAL GOAL to get the BENEFITS MÁSÓPTIMAS FOR OUR PLAYERS IN DIFFERENT SITUATIONS OF 1×1, taking into account the characteristics outlined above of our team and relying on the following concepts:
- DEFINE THE AREAS where the INITIALS OF THE DIFFERENT PROFILES OF PLAYERS in the quintet, differentiating between 4 external and 1 internal.
- FREEING THE AREA OF PLAYERS, increase the free space to facilitate situations 1×1 and difficult situations helps the opponent’s team. In the section on initial provisions we can see how we use situations initials of 5 open (to finish with 4 open and 1 inside) and initial provisions of 4 external and 1 internal (VERY IMPORTANT THE POSSIBLE POSITIONS OF the 5-IN FUNCTION OF THEIR TIME OF ARRIVAL TO TRACK OFFENSE, AND HIS PLAY WITHOUT the BALL FROM BEHIND THE DASHBOARD).
Initial provisions from the CAA
These concepts are united to the necessity of linking the CAA in the most natural way possible with our transition does
that we find ourselves with two initial provisions model depending on whether our 5 is capable of running the CAA for
in front of the ball (not rebotea or after output pressure) or behind the ball (usually after rebound).
OPTION A (5 REBOTEA AND RUNS BEHIND THE BALL, COMES LAST TO THE ATTACK)

OPTION B (THE 5 IS NOT REBOTEA AND RUNS IN FRONT OF THE BALL, COMES THE FIRST ATTACK)

Displayed matches for several seasons of our selections autonomous option that is presented to us is the CHOICE (although 5 do not throw the CAA with the first pass after taking rebound if that has an implication very direct and responsibility at the time of closing the rebound in areas close to the ring, hence a large number of times to reach the last attack). For this purpose we will develop these concepts to be offensive in this article with the initial choice of 5 open, and also because we believe that is the most advantageous for our teams (starting 5 open end 4 ext and a reference to inside). However one of the options first to score in CAA is that our 5 run ahead of its torque to the ring and offensive, given the characteristics of our 5 to the 5 to the rest of the combined, provided that the rebound defensive is already controlled.
Concepts offensive to develop
When developing our transition offense and as a general rule in attack mark it as a PRIORITY to attack 1×1 with ball (as you can see in the graphic above), from there it is only logical that in many situations our 1×1 not be advantageous or simply the defender of man balloon conduct a proper defense of the first two boats of attack, there begin to come into play the 3 concepts of the transition:
- Give it!!!! (Investment + back door + 1×1 outside of the 5 + door behind + hand to hand…).
- SHORT!!!! (Ball interior + court on ball interior + 1×1 interior + hand-in-hand with 1st ext weak side towards bottom-line…).
- I’M going!!!! (Direct blocking + option of bottom-line counter + two options of follow-up blocker…).
This order coincides with the development of concepts offensive within the program of selections, as the options give it!!!! and SHORT!!!! the start to meet in the CHILDREN’s category, and I’M going!!!! it is exclusively for CADET (this is theoretical, it is clear that it is adaptable to the characteristics of each generation).
A statistic to keep in mind in regards to these rules offensive in transition is that our 5, without having the ball and leave the team with advantage in the 1×1, has come to occupy temporarily the “role-based”, by deciding on the option to play in this transition (I-give it to-SHORT). Hence assume a more important role even in the game the communication of 5 with the rest of the players, highlighting the player with the ball.
For the development of these concepts, with the intention not to dwell too long in this article, I’m going to go directly to develop in 5×0 concepts give it!!!! and SHORT!!!!, and more desgranada I’M going!!!!, all of them taking into account the initial situation To the previous (5 open, 5 rebotea and runs behind the ball coming last to the attack). For option B, the work would be similar but taking into account the choices offered to the displacement of 5 to 6,75 from baseline contrary to the ball, mainly in a variety of feints and “baskets easy” winning the back and other concepts. In the development of these concepts we’re not going to include rules for the rebound offensive and balance, even though they were rules very intuitive for the guys in function of their location on the track, being able to talk about the aspects of rebound offensive and balance in another article.
Prior to all these concepts, this would have to add a job of spacing offensive from 2×0 up 5×0, which they had been working with the guys from seasons ago based largely on what has been stated by Jota Cuspinera in the clinic “SPACING: SPACE OCCUPATION IN BASKETBALL,” he gave in Melilla in 2016 on the occasion of the I Clinic Melilla European City of Sport ((https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7ESS2ZR5U&list=PLGqsqjqoSoeTK_N1CVjmpWzceam8CnP1_&index=5).).

“Give it!!!! WITH THE 5 REBOTEANDO AND RUNNING BEHIND THE BALL
(COMES LAST TO THE ATTACK).
The option to give it to!!!!, once stopped our 1×1 and not being advantageous for the team, part of the 5 to the player with the ball in the 45 ° mark with the start of investment of the ball to conclude with a hand-in-hand with the outer corner to the contrary, in a situation of 2×2 in ¼ of the track, taking very present prior to this hand-to-hand 3 possible options advantage generated:

- 1st Possible advantage
Back door of the player 1, after pass 5 and feint away from 6.75 to try to beat your defender the space closest to the ring and be able to score. Key the mobility of feet of 5 to be able to generate a good angle to pass to the back door, taking into account the presence of his advocate.
Important the work that is performed by 2 in the 45th opposite already preparing the future 3rd POSSIBLE ADVANTAGE back door which I will discuss later.

- 2nd Possible advantage
It appears clear to us at the central location in 6,75 5 with the ball, as with the description of the template that is exposed to the opening of our 5 usually has an advantage in that 1×1 outside on players much larger than defend it, even creating from our profile ext-int (prospective adventuring 4) with the threat of shooting from 6,75.

- 3rd Possible advantage
Preparing from the first pass to give it!!!! with the 3rd POSSIBLE
ADVANTAGE movement of 2 from the line of 6.75 and forcing his defender to make a pass line high of 6.75 and providing your options hit in the back door. As in the first back door very important to the improvement of angle of 5 to get to attend 2 next to the ring. Important data is to look at how 2 after failing to receive at your back door occupies the opposite corner, leaving an interesting 2×2 in ¼ of track in this case between 4 and 5 (with the profiles exhibited before, we have no problems to play this hand in hand, as our foreign shuffled a similar profile as the we are naming 1, 2, 3 and 4.

- 4th Possible advantage
Once valued and all the possible advantages above, and without ruling out the PRIORITY of attack 1×1 always, we find an action from hand to hand in 45 ° between 5 and 4 (2×2 in ¼ of track). Highlight the feint previous 4 to go up to the hand-to-hand, without entering into the technical details of both players on hand-to-hand, emphasizing the idea that we approach the player from opposite corner when there are 3 missions in a same ¼ of the track to try to win back line to your defender and score, or even win an optimal situation rebound offensive as this hand in hand we can lumping inside of final actions of attack, either by completion of man’s ball, pass then below the free throw or handles on opposite side.
“SHORT!!!! WITH THE 5 REBOTEANDO AND RUNNING BEHIND THE BALL
(COMES LAST TO THE ATTACK).
The choice of the SHORT!!!! part of the main idea of getting benefits from a physical advantage in the post with the ball, they are not always able to put the ball to the post, and therefore we propose in the system FREE alternatives to this system (which we will see in following sections), and from there you have options to score in pre-cut 5, cut dowel to the post, 1×1 internal player, after the replacement of 1st outer opposite side and hand-in-hand towards the bottom line with the 2nd outside of the opposite side (the other 2×2 in ¼ of track). We develop these potential benefits:

- 1st Possible advantage
The first possible advantage part of the court of 5 with the ball at 45 degrees, your intention must be cut ahead of his defender and win the position in areas close to the ring. From there, you could get the basket, however, is complicated with the profile of players that introduces our staff, continuing the movement to assess new potential benefits. To do this our 5 will make a job of playing without the ball required to win the position in the mid pole of hand ball.
This situation is SHORT!!!! born one of the BASIC RULES OF OUR OFFENSIVE GAME, as to be able to pass to the low post from the 45th to the corner of the stronger side must not be occupied, providing passing angles and the future game 1×1 ball in the post with what that implies you have another defender so close with the capability to help. In these graphs we can see the ideas that we use to release this corner during the game without the ball 5 to receive in the mid pole. It is worth noting the need to find passing angles, plus add a general recommendation on the type of pass to work these players depending on if they are in contact or not with their counsel:
- Contact your advocate: get bitten on the hand of reception, outside of the cylinder of the attacker, and as far as possible from the defender.
- No contact with his defender: go straight inside the cylinder of the player.

- 2nd Possible advantage
After searching for the best angle for a pass and with the ball already inside, the pin cut on the ball inside to just below the rim with the following considerations:
- Feint prior to baseline.
- You will need to take as a reference to move the vertex of the area, with the weekend, keep enough distance with the man the ball in the court by the zonae prevent the defender of the court to be able to help on the man’s ball concert ease.
- Replaced in the corner of the weak side.
- The pass to this court in categories of training is often effective, as is very usual relaxation defensive defender of the pin to release the ball, leading to advantages in that court (as a handicap we tend to find ourselves difficulties of the interior to execute that pass optimally).

- 3rd Possible advantage
After this chance pass to the court (1st PLAY TO ATTEND), we pass to the possibility to generate, through 1×1 his back (2nd PLAY 1×1) even though, for our player profiles predominates the following: GENERATE TO THE OTHER, either with assistance in situations of advantage of external as in the graph marked as a 4th possible advantage with the replacement of the first outer side opposite, or hand-to-hand toward bottom-line as we will see in the 5th possible advantage. This 4th possible advantage is given mainly by a defence does not very aggressive about 2, facilitated their reception and subsequent attack on a 1×1.

- 4th Possible advantage
In the third option with ball inside, we contemplate GENERATE FOR OTHERS, especially when the replacement of 2 on the strong side is well-defended, we contemplate the option to play a new hand-to-hand toward bottom-line in ¼ of a track. without forgetting the option of following 5 toward the center of the area to receive or to obtain a good position to rebound offensive, and the option to gain bottom-line player in the opposite corner with 3 outdoor in ¼ of a track.
“I’M going!!!! WITH THE 5 REBOTEANDO AND RUNNING BEHIND THE BALL
(COMES LAST TO THE ATTACK)
I’M going!!!! it is the only concept offensive of the 3 that we are talking about totally new to the cadets FMB, as
in the CHILDREN’s category if they work with small details give it!!!! and SHORT!!!!, so I decided to
GO!!!! develop the work we do to introduce this concept in our attack. Without forgetting all the work
technician that encompasses these concepts, tactical, our work starts in the 2×0 and it is going to evolve until the 5×5 of
a phased manner, taking in the new rules that are generated when you change spacing initials and increase the number
of players.
2×0 – I

The start of 2×0 I’M going!!!! we mark the two-pronged offensive that we are going to
present during its execution, both directly dialed with the type of the continuation of our internal player after blocking the player with the ball (looking approximately as a zone blocking the intersection of the line of 6.75 with the prolongation of the lateral line of the area)
- THEN TYPE 1 (ROLL): our sunscreen continuous below the free throw line (below in blue in the graphic).
- THEN TYPE 2 (POP): our sunscreen is going to be open in 6.75 above the free throw line.
3×0 – I

– FIRST SPACING 3×0 (I’M going!!!!):
This first spacing in 3×0 on I go!!!! us trademark details about the position of the canopy in 45th of the opposite side, to which we ask the following:
- Read the defense blocking direct proposal by the opposing team, marking it as the key to the option of reducing the pass line with the man the ball in situations of defenses as aggressive as 2×1 in the direct blocking.
- Another option, although less used, it is cut on the back of his defender at the time that try to help on the output of the lock-man ball.
- The most used is to move away from the ball (rules spacing) when man ball manages to attack the center after you exit the direct blocking, in order to punish possible aid from strong side and worsen distances in the recovery defensive of her man.

– SECOND SPACING 3×0 (I’M going!!!!):
Seems to be key to the situation of the player outside corner opposite to the ball, as he
the advantages gained from this position tend to be very beneficial for the team, either by shots released, extrapass or even the option to play bottom line and win back his defender (green arrows). Staying with the more attractive option of back door with completion next to the ring, mark the following details the THEORETICAL to the player in the corner (highlighted the term theoretical because many of them will vary in function of the ombudsman and his reaction to the defense of the direct blockage in the diagonal, being the last defender):
- Make a first intention body up to block blind the player of 45°, totally contrary to the desired option of winning bottom line.
- Time of departure of the blocking player with ball, coinciding with its entrance into 6,75, WIN BOTTOM LINE (VERY IMPORTANT: BEHIND THE BOARD!!!!).
- Time to man the ball on the free kick, coinciding with its entrance in the area, STOP BEING BEHIND THE BOARD AND PASS TO BE WITHIN THE AREA TO RECEIVE AND NOTE (key perform this movement with the ball in the air during the pass and attack the same by turning the body with a lock on the likely recovery of the defender).

– THIRD SPACING 3×0 (I’M going!!!!):
This third spacing 3×0 includes the third player in the corner of strong side, presenting key to gain an advantage in continuations type 1 and to continue playing in continuations type 2, as you’ll see below:
C1. THIRD SPACING 3×0 (I’M going!!!!):
From the first option clear advantage with the penetration of man’s ball for the center generates two clear options to score from strong side:
- Ball to the next, shot with a high percentage (key work without the ball from 3, going up to a 45 ° angle to protect your advocate possible aid on the next page).
- Ball 3-in-45º 6.75 for shooting released (key continued 5 is as fast as possible, with the purpose of generating doubts the defender of 3 between helping on 5 or stay with 3).
A correct reading of this decision, defensive 3-can lead to shots of high
percentages, complicated to receive assistance if the quality of the pass is acceptable, 5-going fast and the timing of 3 by 6.75 correct.

C2. THIRD SPACING 3×0 (I’M going!!!!) WITH CONTINUED TYPE 2 (POP – ABOVE-SHOT-FREE):
The option to pop in our 5 in these times generates two options clear advantage:
1. T3 of our player ext-int with the threat from 6,75 when you take the roll of 5.
2. Back door on the player in the corner, the player in the corner should move in feinting to 5 just in time to receive a 1-to play the back door by the bottom line (important to the improvement of angle of 5 for the possible pass). This option back door includes the need to work on a court outside from the 45th to the contrary at the time of winning bottom line (see graphics 5×0) for ball bent to the center of the zone or optimal position rebound offensive.

3. In case of not being able to go to the back door, 3 will return on his steps to play a new 2×2 on hand-to-hand to the centre in ¼ of the track, generating possible options score in penetration, ball bent to the following below the free throw or as can be seen in graphics 4×0, and 5×0 player opposite corner with 3 outdoor in ¼ of track that earns bottom line.
In order not to dwell too long on this article I am going to remove the various options 4×0, because all of them arise from combining the standards previously established in 2×0 and 3×0, going on to expose the graphics for 5×0 with the two types of continuations are possible.
5×0 – I

All of these forms of 2×0, 3×0, 4×0 are worked in parallel in situations of attack-defense (2×2, 3×3, and 4×4), including different scores in addition to the annotation based on the concept that you are working with and the details that we have more advantageous at home concept.
Previous job to the central part of the session (Wheel shot with concepts of offensive 2×0 and 3×0)
Once assimilated much of these concepts by the boys, as usual, in the first part of many training, we were using wheels 2×0 and 3×0 where all the players did a shot at each wave after wave play on and I’M going!!!, Give it!!! or SHORT!!!, passing all for all positions (regardless exterior and interior) as we can see in the example in figure.

Example 2×0 wheel on SHORT!!!! with a row of ball and row of pins to give continuity and choice of shooting all the players, to pass 3×0 we would have 1 row of ball and 2 rows of pins.
Evolution to 5×5 (systems)
All these concepts have a direct relationship with the most common systems used by our team, we can not be 100% of the match time playing CAA and Transitions, this is why we believe we must assimilate the concepts worked out in transition with various systems. Already in the phase of 5×5 our database retrieves his roll of full form, deciding on the choice of system to play (it disappears the “role-based” for our 5 when deciding which option to attack in transition, as explained above). Below, we will expose the correlation of these concepts with the most widely used systems of our book the tactical offensive.
- I’M going!!!! SYSTEM FIST UNDER (very important in situations of little time of possession and after rebound offensive). Coinciding in spacing and concepts I am going!!!! (IDEM assumptions 5×0 in I am going!!!! above).
- Give it!!!! > FREE SYSTEM (after not being able to play ball inside from 45º , investment situation to play back door with first canopy or hand-in-hand with overhang opposite corner).

* SHORT!!!! > FREE SYSTEM (situation of ball interior with standards FMB for hand-to-hand end).

Conclusion
It is clear that this approach depends a lot on the capabilities of the 5 (internal player), a problem arises if we don’t find at least one player per generation with this profile, I can think of two solutions during the preparation before the non-existence of this player profile:
- Work on any player that can meet that profile, and to work for their “expertise” in a partial way, adapting to the different situations in the most advantageous manner or by discarding one of the 3 concepts.
- Valuing the option to play again with concepts of 5 open category child, without a clear reference point for the interior, based on the 1×1 and play without the ball (spacing).
I think it’s very important to the prior work of all the players in all positions, because, not only can we suffer the absence of a player of inner profile in the generation, but also for various reasons (fouls, injuries,…) during a match, always having options within the template or alternative tactics in order to maintain a certain order in the game of CAA, transition, and 5×5.
Notably, within the program of selections that these concepts are initiated by the child, with lower standards and less structured, without defining both the profile of 5 (they all do) and bearing in mind especially the option to give it to!!!! with investment, and hand-to-hand, and the option of a SHORT!!! to possible physical advantage in the low post any of the players. This initial work in child makes it easier for the incorporation of the totality of concepts in category cadet.
