The concept of Step Zero began to take shape in September 2017. There was a rumor for all the Social Networks you said you were going to eliminate the Steps of Output (finally were not suppressed at all, I’ll explain later).
Prior to disseminate information of the barely knew anything, personally I preferred to wait for the FIBA rule in this regard. When the FIBA spoke, and drew the new standard to the couple announcing the entry into force on 1 October 2017, the new Rules of FIBA (there were more changes in this latest update).
Once it’s announced the new article, I had to be cautious about when to teach it. Before everything had to interpret first the referees and then the coaches will take the practical applications in terms of the technical individual. Finally, players are tasked to put it in practice, and even innovate movements within the law.A process of innovation and (re -) adaptation to technical foundations, individual, affecting the Boat, the Pass and the Shot.
Then, the article of the regulation in question (the original and the translation into Spanish):

Travelling rule (Art. 25.2)
Purpose: To have a common worldwide travelling rule that better reflects the actions on the court.New wording:• While moving and having one foot on the floor while catching the ball or ending to dribble the next foot or feet to touch the floor is ‘Step 1’ and will become the pivot foot.• Please refer to the additional material on the new travelling rule which is included in a separate presentation.

Advance illegal (Art.25.2)
Objective: to Have a rule of advancement illegal common throughout the world that better reflects the actions on the field of play.New wording:• While a player moves and has one foot on the ground when in control of the ball or ends the dribble, the next foot or feet touch the ground is the “Step 1” and will be the pivot foot.• Please check the additional material on the new rule advancement illegal that is included in an attached presentation.
Before I explain the rule, there are a few basic considerations to keep in mind:
- Everything that was previously not Advance illegal , is still Progress to be illegal. What before were not steps, now you also may be.
- The rule applies only when the player controls the ball in motion, and with a foot on the ground. The movement can be walking, trotting, running on sprint.
- The twists are also considered to be movement.
- The standard SHALL NOT APPLY to a player who controls the ball:
- In motion with both feet in the air.
- In motion with the two feet on the ground.
- In standing with two feet on the ground.
- In standing with one foot on the ground.

This innovation in the standard not only affects the movements of individual technique related to the pass, the boat and the shot. It also affects the exits, stops, pivots and back sides.
Before diving into the new universe of technical possibilities, it is decisive to know to explain it to teach it.
It is difficult to change the schema to which we have so much time devoted full time to the Basketball. It is critical to integrate this new concept with our being in order to teach it fluently. Once this step, there is an interest by the new horizons that are present and investigate.
Finally, our first goal is to find a simple and efficient way to explain it, so as not to leak any hue. We’re not going to deny, the Zero Step is very complex and explaining it is difficult if we do not know where to start. To me, personally, I like to explain it in a very concrete and visual.
The Metaphor of Light
This metaphor came to me to the head by the need to explain the Step Zero quickly and concisely.I had to add a supplement to the learning of the players without the novelty they desorientara in excess.
It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words, and metaphors are great because in addition to the image we also have a micro-story.
All the world knows the operation of a traffic light (even if you have no driving license). Even a child can explain how it works.
The green disc corresponds to the Step Zero.
The disk amber corresponds to the pivot foot.
The red disk corresponds to the last support is performed before stopping.
After having stopped, the pivot foot is the one that corresponds to the amber (the same as a stop on two times prior to the STEP ZERO). Now, if we ask the child what their parents do when you’re driving and you see the amber disk, the first thing that we tell will be that their parents hold them back.
If we ask that if you always halts, will tell us that sometimes they jump. It may also be that we get to say what makes a lot of people who can’t stop or don’t want to stop. You jump.To skip our particular set of traffic lights, will have to be discarded. To be lawful:THE BALL HAS TO be OUT OF OUR HANDS TO THROW… BEFORE going BACK TO SUPPORT THE FIRST WALK THAT we SUPPORT (STEP ZERO).
Below are several explanatory diagrams of how to apply the STEP ZERO, both when receiving a pass, like when you end a dribble.

In the Step Zero applied after receiving a pass:- In the stop, we have the options to dribble, pass or shoot. – Both in the pass as in the shot, we can raise the pivot foot (amber/yellow) as long as the pivot foot is not re-contact with the ground before we released the ball to pass or shoot. By power, we can even pick up the last foot support (red) always and when not in contact with the ground before we released the ball to pass it or throw it away.

In the Step Zero applied after the end of the pot (finalizing the dribble):- In the stop, we will be options to pass or throw. After clarify and illustrate the theory, we move on to the practical application of the STEP ZERO and their integration in the education and modernization of the technical foundations of individual that we know.
Integration of the Zero Step in the Fundamentals of Individual Technical
In this first part of our article, we will mention and explain how the STEP ZERO is a revolution in the technical foundations of individual that we know of to date. We will begin with the stops, the outputs, the back, the back sides and we end up naming the combos.
Stops
From now on, players will have more options when choosing how to combine the rests on the Stops, both to control the ball after receiving a pass as ending the dribble.
Stops in 3 times
The first one is the quickest to deduce after the entry into force of the Step Zero. Have an extra support before performing the that was previously known as a stop of yugoslavia. That is to say, to give the extra support cattle with the Step Zero, then do the classic stop-yugoslav.ATTENTION: If you make this stop, then there is no possibility of swing to not be given the pivot foot and have exhausted all the support. Yes, you can jump with both feet at the same time to spend or throw always, and when you have released the ball before returning to support any of the two feet.
The second is the modification of the classic stop-yugoslav.Prior to the Step Zero, once made, could not swing. Now with the STEP ZERO, taking the first support as Step Zero and the next support, for being a stop at a time, you have the option of being able to swing. It is the Stop Yugoslav Modern.A breakthrough with many consequences to the time of work of the Stops and the outputs.

Outputs
From now on, players will have more options when choosing to perform a dodge when they receive a pass during the race and have a defender in front of you.
Output Zig-Zag
The novelty of the Step Zero, also created new movements.
Formerly would have been steps, but now it will be something normal to see on a Basketball court.
The first support (Step Zero) is made to one side, then perform the following support (Step 1) to the opposite side to finally start to dribble the ball before lifting the support of the (Step 1), and of course, before supporting the (Step 2).
In a way, this output reminds me very much of the Euro-Step. The main difference is that the Euro-Step served to finish and this move is to initiate an output.
The player that knows how to use it will be the one to read the reaction of the defender and to know if completing the output, or to be able to perform the extension (the third support in the same direction that the second) after leaving his defender in the second support.

Output after 1/4 turn
With the Step Zero poles agile will win in speed, being able to go out to get open after you have posted. To apply the Zero Step, they will have to receive on the foot farthest from the aro, support the second, and bounce before returning to support the first foot. It is very likely that some Internal fast-use this output to gain bottom-line.

Output Karate-Kid
Output bit known that can be seen more often since that will give us the possibility of choosing between the output Zig-Zag and the stop Zig-Zag. Its name comes from the similarity to the mythical movement that appeared at the end of the movie Karate Kid-(the good, 1984).
What characterizes this output is that it receives by giving a little push towards the back and falling to the paw-take on a walk.
Before we had to catch the ball in the air and falling backwards on one foot. Now you will need to synchronize the time in control of the ball, being able to choose two moments:
- The classical with the Step-Zero Built-in: control the ball having previously given the momentum back and be the leg-grab on the move.
- The evolved: control the ball in motion with a foot supported while the backward impulse to fall on the other foot.

Output with feint stop
Without Step Zero, would have been a few steps sensational. Now, with the Step Zero applied, this stop is legal. The first support (foot green), will be oriented to the band to make it appear that the defender closes us off the road. The second support will be right in front to reinforce that idea. Finally, we will do the last support for stop and exit with an exit cross, making sure to throw it away before lifting the pivot foot (yellow).

Completions
With the establishment of the Zero Step, some completions earn in decision making. The attackers may have extra support if they put into practice the Step Zero. In this way, a few gestures will be more easy to run.
Tickets to the basket
The inputs to the basket earn an extra support with the Step Zero.To be able to apply it, be sure to pick up the ball with a foot on the ground (green). The following support (amber) was the first walk that we before without Step Zero. Now becomes the second support. Finally, the last support (red) for the whipped topping.
In summary:
1 support (red): input with loss of step2 supports (amber+red): the input clásica3 supports (green+amber+red): input with Zero Step.
The key to teaching the Step-Zero entries is to ask the players to the Step Zero – starting the entry with the foot with which they’re finally going to make the topping to be closer to the hoop.

False entry with 2 supports and extra support
In addition to entries on a regular basis with two supports, we know that she can now give a more support by applying the Step Zero. Now, you can play with the length of displacement.
In the attached video you can see how the attacking player (which makes the violation of the classical steps of output -lifting the pivot foot before you start to bounce up and stops doing what at first is an input with two supports. On the second support, jump into the hoop.
The surprise comes when you don’t throw to the basket and made a more supportive leaving no chance of defending their rivals.
Legal move using a consistent way, and unexpected, the extra support that provides the Step Zero.

Eurostep
The Euro-Step is a variant of the entries. Also described in English as ‘long side step’. Some people call entries with steps to the side.
Prior to the Step Zero, you had to finish the dribble with both feet in the air, control/pick up the ball and give the two supports separated laterally.
Now with the Step Zero applied and you get extra support, and therefore, a step side.
The player who performs the Euro-Step, you can choose:- Make the Euro-Step to the full, with a zig-zag of three fingers – Make a extension at the start to give the side-step at the end – Perform the extension and finish with a side step.
Harden with a particularly lethal eurostep. What Jazz announcers aren’t paying attention to is WHEN he picks up the dribble. The left foot is already down when dribble is ended. Then a simple right-left layup. (Oh the right foot drag is also perfectly legal) pic.twitter.com/5iKdMFr5mH

Eurostep stop
Is another possible movement that we can see with the application of the Step Zero.
On this occasion, is to combine the Euro-Step, with stop at 1 time.
We will have two moments in which to make the stop at 1 time:
– On the second support, having the possibility of choosing the pivot foot.
– In the last support, yes, without the possibility of choosing the pivot foot.

False hurdles, finishing with Zero Step
The missteps, also known as leap Russian, has no possibility to apply the Step Zero. It is a gesture that is predestined to disappear for two reasons:
– it has Always been a gesture, which required a huge dose of coordination, as not everyone manages to catch the ball in the air.
– When done well, still taking the ball up in the air, there is a high probability that the referee of the match pite advance illegal by the habit of seeing the gesture of the missteps badly made.
These are the main reasons why many coaches discourage the teaching of missteps.
However, you can make a fake traspies (jump without catching the ball, falling on the same foot on the that was whipped) to finally catch the ball after having supported since the foot and continuing the movement.
The effectiveness of the movement can be put in doubt. What is clear is that a gesture legal and yes it would fit on a basketball court since it does not incur any violation.

Step back
The Step-Back was a gesture for a complicated coordination training. Had to end up falling backwards after having given support after controlling the ball. The difficulty resided at the time of initiating the count of steps. Falling backwards with a stop at a time (two feet contacting the ground at the same time) after a single impulse is not easy. In addition, there was no possibility of swing.
STEP-BACK WITH ZERO STEP:Now with Zero Step, you can do the same but with extra support, which means more comfort to the time to generate and control the momentum back.
STEP-BACK WITH a STOP IN 2 DAYS:The Step-Back before he was penalized in case of terminate with a stop at two times, now is it legal for the application of the Step Zero.
STEP-BACK WITH the POSSIBILITY OF PIVOT:The Step-Back old, it gains more support (having the possibility of swing) if we incorporate correctly the Step Zero.

Entries with regard alternate
This type of completion is a proposal that I make. It is a movement that respects the principles of application of the Zero Step , and that deserves to be known. The concept is simple. It consists in making the Zero Step toward a sense, to change direction (no direction) with the second support to finally return to the initial meaning with the last support.
Forward, back, forward
The meaning before you take the Step Zero will be the last. Very useful in the area, given the proximity of the ring.It can be used in a completion. Giving the Zero Step we take momentum back. The defender can follow the attacker (in case of not doing so you would end up with stop and shoot). If you follow the attacker, it will use the second support to move forward and have a third support to end with more closeness, and therefore more precision.

Back, forward, back
In this case, is used as in the vicinity of the ring. Use the second support to get a boost backwards and end up with a shot to the back with a single support (Fade Away). You can get a lot of advantage after ‘sink’ to the defender with the second support. To master balance back with a only support because without having a good base of support will not be achieved by a good shot.

Entries with regard alternate finished in Stop
Another movement that was once impossible. Entries with regard alternate combined with the stop at a time, either the second support, either in the past (if it is in the last support, you can not swing).
Forward, back, forward ending with a Stop
With this option, we ended up stopping at a time in the last support. We can not swing but jump in with both feet at the same time to pass or throw.
Back, forward, back, ending with a Stop
With this option, we ended up stopping at a time in the last support. We can not swing but jump in with both feet at the same time to pass or throw.
Forward, backward, Stopping at 1 time choosing address of the last support
With this option, we make a stop at a time on the second support having the option to terminate with input forward or Fade Away (step to pull back.
Back, forward and Stop at 1 time choosing address of the last support
With this option, we make a stop at a time on the second support having the option to terminate with input forward or Fade Away (step to pull back.

Reverse dns
Prior to the Step Zero, perform a reverse of the correct way was an odyssey since most of the players ended the dribble before really support the last two supports. Now with the Step Zero is almost impossible to make the violation of Advancement Illegal.
Reverso classic
The reverse of always. To do so before the Zero Step, you had to catch the ball in the air before they support the foot on which he was going to swing. In case of pick it up before jumping, there were 3 support and was advancing illegal (Steps). Now with the Zero Step is legalized that support caused the Steps.
Back with the jump with 1/2 turn and Stop Yugoslav Modern
This back is difficult for you to carry out, but the advantage is that you can end up with a support towards the ring if it has performed well in the Zero Step. Is a Stop of Yugoslav Modern with a twist.
Back with the jump in the second support ended in a stop in 1 time with no possibility of pivot
When you perform the second support is made a twist with 1/2 turn to fall in 1 time. YOU CAN NOT SWING. YES, YOU CAN JUMP WITH BOTH FEET AT THE SAME TIME AND GO OR THROW IN THE AIR.
Reverse kamikaze
Reverse patented by a server, Cedric Arregui.Technically, level of coordination, very complex to make because it includes a turn 2/3 turn at each support.Technically, you have to pass the ball behind the back at the same time you turn to avoid exposing the ball to the defender, hence the name.In case of not passed the ball behind your back while you make turns, outline the ball with the dubious advantage that can be missing if the defender feels the urgent temptation to steal the ball and finish by grabbing or hitting any of the arms of the attacking player. It would penalize with free kicks because the attacking player is in continued action of shooting.

Combos
In this last section, on a technical level, I’ll talk about combos.Combos consist in combining a start dribbling with Step Zero terminated with an end-of dodge with Step Zero.If you put the most basic example, in a run from midfield to receive the ball with a foot on the ground and in motion, we have:
- The Step Zero at the reception.
- Step One in the following support.
- The start of the dribble (pot) before returning to support the foot, which served as a Step Zero.
- The end of the dribble, catching the ball (taking control) remain in motion with a foot on the ground (Step Zero).
- Step One in the following support.
- Step Two as the last support.
We are talking about 6 supports with a single pot. The first two without pot, the third with a boat and the last 3 without pot. Something unthinkable before the October 1, 2017, the date on which it entered into force the Step Zero.
Integration of the Zero Step in the fundamentals of tactical collective
The entry into force of the Zero Step affects the Individual Technique. These changes at the time of working on Individual skills are also transferred automatically to the Tactic. There is a phrase that I never tire of repeating to my players: ‘Without technique there is not a tactic’. As a coach you’re not going to get anywhere if you work the tactic having players with deficiencies in their individual technique. However, the opposite turned upside down.
Maybe you can have a computer that does not have the tactical so worked, but with individual technique, players will enjoy more playing and be more creative. Some Basics and tactical are going to evolve in how much speed is concerned, since there is no need to throw out so much, either at the start of the dribble as in the end. The exterior can take the Locks Direct and Indirect picks up much faster and will have more time to decide to have a more supportive and freeing themselves of the extra chore to be outstanding to dribble the ball as soon as possible.
Application of the Zero Step in the Locks Direct
The main benefit with the Step Zero are the players who put the Direct Blocking (Blockers), which tend to be players interiors, since they can easily apply, and get more out in the continuations of the Locks Direct, being able to receive the ball further away from the hoop and have more travel without the need of having to bounce the ball (which is an easily added since there is little space in the restricted area of 3 seconds). The players who take to the Direct Blockage (Takers) can only obtain something of benefit for the Step Zero if you decide well. And that necessarily be a good reading of the game. I’ll have to work these situations to acostumbrarles to decide on the fly how to use the extra support.
Application of the Zero Step in the Indirect picks
In the Indirect picks– blockers continue to enjoy the same benefits that Locks Direct.
The makers will have more choices in deciding what kind of stops and outputs to perform. There will be training a lot of shooting to get the handles to calibrate the movement in relation to the distance they are going to make the launch to the basket.
Application of the Zero Step in the Passes in hand, or Pass hand to hand
Passes in hand going to change much. In the three phases. Before, during, and after.
Before: The player who delivers the Pass in Hand will be able to stop bouncing before, controlling the ball and avoiding theft or possible losses due to failures in the pot.
During: The players must get used to recalibrate the time (timing) and the site (spacing) of the exchange of the ball.
After: The players collectors of the Pass in Hand, you will have to decide what kind of stop or exit do. Using the Step Zero you will have more time and space to be able to decide. At the time of exit to pass, will come as more released, having eliminated the classic mini-stop is performed to prevent a possible violation of article of ‘Advancement Illegal‘.
Final considerations of the Step Zero
After having explained, understood, and analyzed the revolution of the Zero Step in its application to the game, it’s time to make the final considerations.
The main objective of the Step Zero is to get as close to the NBA Basketball. The steps of output still exist, make no mistake, though now only be limited to the stops does not imply that no longer exist. There will be more counter-attacks. Before many of them died suddenly through the steps of output.
Some gestures look with even less frequency:
- the control in speed with slap forward with one or two hands will be less frequent.
- the hurdles will not be so used because, in addition to being complex in its execution, will be more simple to give 3 support and keep my feet on the ground to be able to decide. The stumble is a marvel to level of coordination, but yes it is true that, there is that to catch the ball after having jumped and having the two feet in the air, and then take the 2 supports (first support is with the foot that gave the momentum of the jump).
Returning to our final considerations… at The beginning there were many critics of the Zero Step. The explanations are simple. Mainly there are two and they are closely related. Fear of the unknown and fear of change. At the beginning there was a lot of confusion since they are not explained in detail in the standard. Not known, and it was only logical to be rejected. Later would come the phase of acceptance. Change or die. Says it all. For both players and coaches. It is very important that coaches are aware of the wealth that is going to bring the Zero Step to our beloved sport.
Many times I hear the Step Zero is going to make the game more accessible since anyone will be able to play. In a way, yes, because some people will encourage more to play since it will be most unlikely that violate the norm of the steps. But if ahondamos in the technical aspect, although it may be more difficult to make steps, it will also be more complex decisions (always that we want to apply the Step Zero), in addition to succeed in the election. However, complex because it does not have to be scary. Who will understand it and will take advantage, you will greatly benefit from all the tactical situations that we have discussed. Yes, the Zero Step will have to be built on the Technical Foundations of the individual.
Players can work on their own, but let’s be realistic. Where more and the better you can work on it in training. The coaches will have to extend the teaching of the Technique, integrating the Zero Step in the exercises 1×0 for players to adapt in a first time without opposition. Then with the defenders of the hits that don’t take decisions. In the next stage, advocates, decision-makers anticipated and/or erroneous. Finally, work with superioridades numerical and finally with equal numerical. We have to take advantage of the integration of the Step Zero in the individual technique to train and also to our supporters. These have to be able to first identify and then to be able to foresee, what types of outputs and stops can be performed by the attackers. Finally, do not become obsessed only with the Zero Step , or work separately. We have to integrate it completely. Like for example there is a loss of step inputs, now there is an extra support. As the shooting board is a complementary resource in the shot, the Step Zero should be to receive a pass or complete a dribble.
The purpose of this article was to explain, analyze, and transfer the Step Zero of the Technique and Tactics. I trust that I have done and helped bring the Step Zero to players and coaches. The revolution of the Zero Step is in progress. Benefits tod@s. Whoever does not want to understand this new reality will be free to do so. Each and every individual is free to decide on their fate. Now, let’s be responsible and think of the players. They have been, are and will always be the protagonists. Enjoy this great change that will make it much more attractive to our precious Basketball.
